Achieve a Pain-Free Life With Spinal Decompression

Part of the way chiropractic therapy works is by releasing tension in your vertebrae through a process called decompression therapy.

Here at Bowden Family Spine and Sport, we use this technique to treat bulging and herniated discs. Decompression helps the discs retract, while the subsequent restoration of the flow of water, oxygen, and nutrients to your discs leads to healing and the reduction of pain.

Decompression therapy can be a great way to treat many conditions.

  • Neck and back pain
  • Sciatica
  • Degenerative disc disorders
  • Worn spinal joints
  • Injured or diseased spinal nerve roots
  • Bulging or degenerated discs

Since you never know when back pain will strike, it's nice to know that effective chiropractic treatments are available.

  • Is Spinal Decompression Effective?

Spinal decompression therapy, which has been around for years, offers an alternative for those suffering from back pain, and many testimonials back up its effectiveness. It is often considered when patients have been told their pain is not serious or can only be addressed through surgery.

In some instances, invasive surgery really is the only option, especially when you face tumors, fractures, or abdominal aortic aneurysms. But if you’re not in those categories, decompression is an option that does not require drugs or surgery.

  • Is Nonsurgical Spinal Decompression Safe?

Existing studies show that decompression is a safe technique. When you compare surgery to nonsurgical spinal decompression, the risks aren’t even close: surgery is far more dangerous to the patient!

  • Is Spinal Decompression Therapy Right for You?

Making your decision will depend on how much you are willing to invest in the life-long health of your back.

    • If you’ve had back pain your whole life and have had no success in eliminating it through other approaches, decompression is a great option.
    • If your doctor insists you need to undergo a spinal fusion to solve a bulging disc problem, consider decompression as a viable alternative.
    • If your back pain has been persistent following a car accident, decompression could help.

In the end, spinal decompression should be considered as part of your comprehensive treatment program. You could potentially live a life free of back pain.

Understand the 2 Types of Decompression Tables

Two types of noninvasive and nonsurgical spinal decompression are available, and they both involve the use of a professional traction table.

One style of table uses a pulley system, while another is divided into an upper body section and a lower body section that operate independently of each other.

Both tables have sensors that show us where back muscles are resisting, so we can reduce the amount of pull until the muscles relax. Advanced tables also track your progress and log your sessions into your files.

Treatments Will Be Personalized to Your Situation

Your individual ailment will determine the duration of your treatment plan and will be based on your age and overall health, your level of pain, the information gathered from your X-rays, and whether or not you've received treatments before.

We also take into consideration the magnitude of the pulling force, the duration of the treatment, and the area we are targeting.

In most cases, you will undergo six to eight sessions before you start noticing benefits. However, especially with patients over 55, it can take longer for positive effects to show up, and you may not see any benefits until session 20.

A complete session usually last 30 minutes. They aren't painful and many patients find them relaxing and even fall asleep during their time on the table.

Decompression Works With Other Therapies

Unlike surgical treatments, which target the immediate problem but often ignore the underlying issues, nonsurgical decompression is part of a comprehensive plan that will address your back pain at its root.

You will learn to mitigate your back issues with exercise and other effective therapies that work together to strengthen your body, improve your flexibility, and help prevent your problem from returning.

  • Core strengthening
  • Core flexibility training
  • Electric stimulation
  • Massage

We also use digital X-rays to further understand your progress.

I’ve been going to Dr. Gary Bowden for a few years now and I’ve been to chiropractors most of my life. Without a single doubt, Dr. Bowden is the best, hands down. He’s a rocket scientist amongst janitors.

He absolutely loves what he does and it shows. Plus he is funny and an educator. You learn things about your body and how it works from him.

His passion to make people better and more healthy is refreshing in today’s society where people are reduced to numbers at most places. One visit and you will see it’s a place like no other. Go here and you will feel the difference in your body.
